When science alive came to burnham school

On Wednesday when science alive was here I was stoked because they were so early.I went into exicted mode!

Observe it was the funniest experiment. You could watch the powders change colour. You write what colour you see. When we added milk powder to iodine it turned a yellowy colour.flour turned the iodine
purple.

It was the best day ever With science alive.I really injoyed it

Science Alive

Suddenly I felt a stroke of excitement because science alive was here.
I liked the experiment adding acid to flour, sugar, milk powder, plaster and baking soda because I chose baking soda to mix and it was the only one that fizzed.

My second favourite experiment was burn it because we got to work around fire. We put all the materials in separate tinfoil cartons and put it over a flame and watched to see if it melted or burnt or smelled.

Before science alive left we shot a fake rocket. I had a fun time with science alive.

Crazy Putty

On Wednesday Room 5 made crazy putty. We used some equipment that Miss Sheppard had ready on our desks.
  • 60ml PVA glue
  • 60ml water
  • 60ml of borax solution( 1 cup of warm water and 1 and a half teaspoons of borax powder)
  • measuring spoons
  • small cup
  • spoon
Firstly we measured three lots of 20ml of PVA glue with the measuring spoons and put it in the cup. Some groups had to measure 4 lots of 15ml.
Secondly we measured the same amount of water and added it to the cup. We stirred the water and PVA together then we added the same amount of borax solution. We stirred and stirred with a spoon until the liquid was gone and we were left with a white gooey substance.

The crazy putty smelled disgusting like chemicals and cleaning products. It smelled like mouldy things.
It looks like a white pancake, some of the putty was very shiny and glistening and other putty had small bubbles in it and one groups putty had cracks and small wrinkles in it.
The putty felt gooey, squishy, sticky, slimy, runny, frothy, damp, mushy and bouncy. It was warm to touch after it had been played with in our hands.

So why did the liquids come together to make a solid?

The PVA glue you use is a type of polymer called polyvinyl acetate (PVA for short), while the borax is made of a chemical called sodium borate. When you combine the two in a water solution, the borax reacts with the glue molecules, joining them together into one giant molecule. This new compound is able to absorb large amounts of water, producing a putty like substance which you can squish in your hands or even bounce ( sciencekids.co.nz)

Lost in Space Wonderings

Questions we have about space

How many stars are in space?
What is a black hole?
How many planets are in our solar system?
What planet is near the Milky Way?
What planet is closest to earth?
Where did the stars, earth and moon come from?
What creates solar winds?
Where is the milky way? What is the milky way?
Do any creatures live on Venus?
How hot is the sun?
How does a star look like a star shape?
Why is Venus really hot?
Why is pluto not a planet anymore?
Do aliens exist?
Have any planets ever been explored?
Where have humans travelled in our solar system?
What are planets made of?
Why is the sun a star?
What's a wormhole?
Why does Saturn have rings?

Hopefully we can answer these questions this term in our science topic - Lost in Space!
