Literacy Term 2 Week 1

This week we have been finding out the features of fiction and non fiction texts.
We went to the library and had to find similarities and differences between a non fiction book and a fiction book.
This is what we found out

Then we brainstormed all of the different genres we could think of.

We will be reading and writing a lot of information reports and explanations this term in our Topic of Lost in Space.

Welcome Back Glog

Hover over the Glogster label at the top of the glog and click view full size.

Then you can click on the tape to hear a song and click the TV to watch a short film clip.

Why not have a go at creating your own glog!

Have a play around with the gadgets to get to know how they work, we will be exploring how to use this tool together in Room 5 this term.

Individual ePortfolios

I have added a link list on the right side of the page, this will take you to each child's ePortfolio.

Please have a look at what has been added to these portfolios so far this term, there will be much more to come!

Part of the ePortfolio is a google docs account where private test results will be emailed and evaluation and reflections will be shared.

We hope to have login and password details for every child's account ready to go home next week. This will enable parents to log in and see recent STAR and PAT test results and to make a comment on their child's portfolio work.

Room 5 Journalists

Last week Dominic had a brilliant idea. He wanted Room 5 to create our own newspaper with news from Burnham School. So this week we are becoming journalists and everyone will write articles for our paper. Thanks for the great idea Dominic!

My Other Mother

This week Room 5 imagined that they found another world beyond a mystery door just like in the story Coraline.

Come and read the descriptions of their 'Other Mothers'.

We will hopefully finish reading the book 'Coraline' by the end of the week and then we will watch the movie in 3D!

Maths
We recorded what the students in Room 5 were making in Maths today with our new iPod nano. This awesome new gadget will make it easier to add more videos to the blogs and e-portfolios.

If you would like to make a Bubble Puzzle at home come and see Miss Sheppard for a template.

Homework

Homework this week is to write a story. You can write it in your homework book or on the class blog. If you are stuck for ideas have a look at the links on the right of the blog.

Remember:
  • Good writers write for an audience, ask your family to read your story and we will have time on Friday for you to share your work with the class.
  • Try your best to show, not tell the reader what is happening.
  • Add some speech and other interesting details to make your audience want to keep reading your story.
  • Re-read, revise and edit your story, don't be afraid to add things and take things away.
I look forward to reading and hearing your stories on Friday!
